Hangeul is a writing system invented in 1444 by king sejong, fourth monarch of the Joseon Dynasty. At the time Koreans 야 not have a writing system that could express the characteristics of their native language and so resorted to the use of Chinese characters. But as this required Chinese-character literacy, it was largely inaccessible to the general populace. Born in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province. Received Bachelor's, Master's and Doctor's degrees from Seoul National University. Taught at Kyungnam University and Inha University. Currently professor at Ewah Womans University. Served as Head of the Language Research Division at the National Institute of the Korean Language, Managing Director of the Foundation International Korean Language, Member of the Korean Language Review Committee of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Chairman of the Association of Korean Language and Culture Center, Chairman of the Society of Korean Linguistics, and Co-President of the Federation of Korean Language and Literature Association......이하생략
